Grande Sonnerie Pocket Watch by Montandon

This rare grande sonnerie quarter-hour repeating pocket watch crafted by Swiss firm Montandon is an impressive work of horology that is as handsome as it is functional. French for “grand strike,” a grande sonnerie chimes on the hours and quarters automatically, a function that can be controlled by sliding lever switches located on the outer rim of this timepiece. The white enamel face displays both Roman and Arabic numerals and graceful blued steel breguet hands, as well as a subsidiary seconds dial. The complex movement is housed in an attractive 18K yellow gold open face case with intricate crosshatching surrounding a central shield. The watch’s movement winds with two flush set folding keys and sets with the accompanying gear-tooth key, while 27 jewels ensure the its accuracy. Montandon was known for the high quality of their movements, frequent use of complications and elegantly decorated cases, all exemplified by the present timepiece.
